Academic Report: The Linguistic Melody of Chinese Poetry

About the Lecturer: Zeng Yongyi is now the chair professor of the Ministry of Education of PRC, the fellow of Academia Sinica of Taiwan, chair professor of Shih Hsin University and National Taiwan University, and invited as Hu Shi chair professor. Prof. Zeng has been the visiting professor at following universities: Peking University, Xiamen University, Wuhan University, Sun Yat-sen University, Shandong University, Henan University, Henan Normal University, University of Hong Kong, National Academy of Chinese Theatre Arts, and Ruhr-Universität Bochum among others. He once was the visiting scholar at Harvard University, University of Michigan, Stanford University and Leiden University. Prof. Zeng has won National Award of Literature and Arts and Sun Yat-sen Award of Literature and Arts.

Prof. Zengs main academic research and teaching is Chinese opera, pop literature, verse and folk arts are the secondary interests. He has published 12 monographs including The Chinese Traditional Theatre, The Construction of the Foundation of Opera and Clarion, The Research on the Evolution of Opera Types, New Exploration on Chinese Opera Tune, and Pop Literature Introduction. He has also published 7 prose works like Unstrained, 9 scripts of the Kunqu Opera like The Butterfly Lovers, 8 Beijing Operas such as Zheng Chenggong and Taiwan, and three operas such as Xiangyu and Yuji as well as Yu Opera Empress Dowager Cixi and Consort Zhen and Taiwan Opera Tao Kanxians Mother.  

About the Lecture: Chinese traditional poetry in nature belongs to verse, which includes many ancient literary styles such as poetry, Song poems, and Yuan Qu, which originated from ancient Chinese music melody and linguistic melody. The Chinese language itself has a rich sense of rhythm. The combination of rhythm and music forms the main body of ancient Chinese poetryverse, which has been the orthodox of Chinese classical literature. Therefore, understanding the linguistic property of Chinese poetry is the key to understanding Chinese classical poetry. Prof. Zeng will analyze and comment on the linguistic melody of Chinese poetry from.
